The Cisco 4000 family Integrated Services Router (ISR) revolutionizes WAN communications in the enterprise branch. With new levels of built-in intelligent network capabilities and convergence, it specifically addresses the growing need for application-aware networking in distributed enterprise sites. The high-speed WAN interface card (HWIC) provides highly flexible connections for Cisco 1800, 2800, and 3800 series integrated services routers. This HWIC helps customers enable applications such as WAN access, legacy protocol transport, console server, and dial access server.

The modular Cisco EtherSwitch HWICs provide line-rate Layer 2 switching across Ethernet ports using Cisco IOS Catalyst Software. Features such as port autosensing, quality of service (QoS), VLAN support from 802.1P and 802.1Q standards, and 802.1D spanning tree protocols are standard on the Cisco EtherSwitch HWIC. The Cisco EtherSwitch HWICs are available in standard 4- or 9-port 10/100BASE-TX switch HWIC and Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) configurations.

Cisco ISR 4321 features modular network interfaces with diverse connection options for load-balancing and network resiliency and modular interfaces with online removal and insertion (OIR) for module upgrades without network disruption.

Cisco 890 Series ISRs deliver integrated security and threat defense, protecting networks from both known and new Internet vulnerabilities and attacks. These powerful, fixed-configuration routers provide secure broadband, Metro Ethernet, and wireless LAN (WLAN) connectivity. Service providers offering managed Ethernet WAN services can deploy them in customer locations as CPE. You get centralized and remote management capabilities through web-based tools and Cisco IOS® Software for full visibility and control of network configurations at the remote site.

The 8-port asynchronous HWIC (HWIC-8A), illustrated in Figure 3-9, provides 8 asynchronous RS-232 interfaces in DTE format, at data rates of up to 230.4 kbps.

The Layer 3 Cisco 1- and 2-Port Fast Ethernet High-Speed WAN interface cards (HWICs) (see Figures 1 and 2) supported on the Cisco 1841, Cisco 2800, and Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers offer small-to-large-sized businesses and enterprise branch-office customers the option to add Layer 3 routed ports with many advanced features, including quality-of-service (QoS) and rate-limiting capabilities. The Cisco Fast Ethernet HWICs are singlewide interface cards, available as a 1-port HWIC (HWIC-1FE) and as a 2-port HWIC (HWIC-2FE), that provide Cisco modular and integrated services routers with additional Layer 3 routed ports.
